Dressed Up and Rockin' It

Charlie likes to express his creativity in MANY different ways.  Here he has combined the art of costuming and music.  I am not sure Rude appreciates the subtle notes of the Paper Jam guitar.

From March or April.

Science School

Monday was Charlie's first day of science school.  Bell rings at 8:30 A.M. and the kids run in from the playground.  I don't get too much information but I do know his teacher is Simon, the class is called, Seashore Life, they play Simon Says, and they go on "a lot of field trips."  The rest?  Well, I will have to see what I can draw out of him.

In the meantime here are some photos from the first day of school.

What a show.

Scrimmage

Last Wednesday Charlie started up summer lacrosse, where once a week the boys get together with the coaches and work on passing - or maybe something new each week.

Charlie is in white, Hunter is in maroon.

New Duds, Thanks to Brenda

Last night Brenda came to the house with Charlie's new Coolibar swimshirt. She outfits the Quisset Yacht Club with sun protection and we wanted to get in on the action. His whole life Charlie has worn a swimshirt. This year he has a new suit but no matching shirt. Brenda sent me the Coolibar link and I found just what I was looking for - a shirt that would cover baby white skin in style, and matching an orange and blue suit.

See...

My Teenage 7-year-old

So, my teenage 7-year-old mosied on down stairs today at 10.  A.M. In the morning..  (Just to be sure you understand.)

Hair all swirled on top of his head as a result of the warm-up bath after the freezing swim at the Last Day of School Beach Party - in the 63 degree water.  You get the picture right?

You see, he was tired.  He was tired because he stayed up all hours of the night, until 9:30, building snap circuits, this sciency toy where you create electrical inventions.  And he loves it.  He has always deemed himself an inventor.  To us he is the hip hop scientist.  Or to his cousin, aunt, and uncle he is Crazy Cousin Chaz - or Triple C.

Well, it's about time to ride bikes in the church parking lot.  Happy First Day of Summer!

Becoming a Wolf

Friday night was the Cub Scout Crossover Picnic.  It is where the boys walk over a bridge to the next ranking in scouts, which in Charlie's case happens to be a wolf.

My 2004 camera has gone into retirement so I dusted off its 2011 replacement, took it off the shelf, and decided to give it a whirl.  The results were far less than fabulous, but...

Hopefully the learning curve on this thing is pretty quick.  This IS the season to be taking pictures!

Oh, did I forget to mention - part of the ceremony involves facepaint?  It was only a little Lord of the Flies.  We have been far closer previous in the year, but I guess that is boys being boys.

Like a Kid Again

Tonight after dinner I took Charlie outside to blow bubbles.  He was having such a good time he forgot who he was - or something..

Charlie - I LOVE bubbles! This is so fun.  I feel like a kid again!

Me - Uh, you are a kid.

Us - Hehehehehe.

It's fun being silly.

Snapshots

Trying to decide which photo to bring to the casting call.  Opinions?

Casting Call: Grown Ups 2

Adam Sandler is coming to Marblehead!  Charlie and I are heading to the casting call this Sunday.  The other day he watched the opening bit of Grown Ups to get a feel for the movie, but the PG-13 rating was true to form - shut it down around the time the 48-month-old was asking Mommy for milk, which Charlie thought was hysterical...

And a fan is born.

Lacrosse Star Trooper

Charlie started Lacrosse Monday.  Here is a photo of him in his gear!  Thanks Uncle Wes!  One more thing you and this little guy have in common.

He does sort of look like a Storm Trooper.

(Like the sketch of e.e. cummings in the background?)

Fishing with Frog

Last weekend Charlie and I stayed in Arlington, took the T to Boston and went to Boston Commons, the Public Garden, and wandered around a bit.  While we were there I seemed to take quite a few pictures of Charlie with various statues.  Hmm.

He must have felt like hamming it up as he had me to take a picture of him riding each one of Mrs. Mallard's duckings.

Green April, First Grade

Usually I feel the need to print out important notices about Charlie's school.  But in the effort to go green, I will post instead.  Here is an email from Charlie's teacher about how they plan to accomplish this goal, with our help, of course.

Howdy Families!

Welcome to a new month--a little chilly start! The first grade team has decided to "Go Green" this month and we are trying a number of activities to encourage kids to be earth-friendly. There are many things we already do, but this will help to raise awareness even more--and some of it will be really fun! Here is some of the information. I will be talking with the kids and alerting them to the upcoming events.

Have a great start to April!

***
April is a Green Month!

First Graders are “going green” throughout the month of April! In school, we will be working on the following concepts: taking care of Earth, conservation, reducing, reusing, and recycling, and how our choices affect the world around us. We will tie this unit into our lifecycle unit through planting and maintaining a garden.

The first project of the month will be The First Grade Recycling Center. We will be collecting and recycling: paper, plastic, cans, cardboard, shoes, clothing, old toys, and books. All collected items will be recycled or donated. Throughout the month, families are encouraged to send in any or all of these items, and the students will sort and recycle.

The next project will be Paper Free Day. We will not use any paper for our school work. Although it seems like a small gesture, we are hoping the idea goes a long way!

We will also have Waste-Free Lunch Day. After learning about reusable materials, the students will be encouraged to pack a completely waste-free lunch. All students will be given a cloth napkin. This will be their napkin to keep. We are hoping they will continue to use the cloth napkin daily. It can easily be stored in a backpack compartment and washed with any load of laundry. Although it is a little extra effort, it saves the many paper napkins that are wasted each day. We will also use this napkin during snack time.

Last, after spring vacation, we will plant a garden. Students will plant and maintain individual plants as well as a classroom garden. We will also take part in the creation of the Mullen Hall Garden.

Please take a few minutes to discuss these upcoming projects with your child. Our goal is for all students to realize that they are caretakers of the environment and that their actions can help make a difference on our planet.

We truly appreciate your help!

La la, La la la la, La la la la la

I have a friend on Facebook who decided that today should be Positive Facebook Day.  I went ahead and changed it to Happy Facebook Day.

La la, La la la la, La la la la la.
La la, La la la la, La la la la la.
Sing a happy song.

Happy Facebook Day, Y'all!

Happy Spring

'Twas a foggy morning.  This little birdy decided to make me a pretty photograph..

Seems the fog has burned off - though I do still hear the foghorn in the background.

Hmm... Dylan

This evening piano practice evolved into this channeling of Bob Dylan, or something.  The strange thing is - Charlie had never heard of Bob Dylan until tonight when I told him he sounded like him.

Am I the only one who thinks this is strange?

This is the hip hop kid, the boy who loves Cee Lo, Maroon 5, and Blake Shelton.  (Can you guess why?)

I knew he had music in his soul but I never imagined he would be singing like this.  Piano lessons were a really good move.

A song to compare with Bob Dylan Charlie... Bob Dylan and "I Want You."

And the credits, well they speak for themselves... youtube, Dylan... Probably in the reverse order.

Hello This Is Bob Dylan Charlie

Into the cave.  (Piano practice.)

What - a - ham.

A Little More Bob

In case that wasn't enough...

Bob Dylan Charlie

Piano practice this evening devolved (still searching for the right word, but I came up short) into this...

Regressed?

A Little More Spring Poking Up

About a week ago, before school, Charlie said something to me about the sounds of summer returning.  He is right, they are.  From the driveway, waiting for the bus between bounces of the basketball, you can hear boatyard commotion.

These three photos show a bit more spring poking up.  The first is the faintest bit of red on the tree by the entrance to the Boatyard condo place.  And then of course, daffodils.

Signs of Spring

This morning while waiting for the bus, Charlie and I looked around for some signs of spring.  Later, I took a few photographs of what we saw.

The first three are from our driveway.  The crocus is from the lawn a few houses down.  Rudy and I discovered it on our walk.
